The ranks of the wanna-be fitness buffs are starting to thin out at the gym.
People who signed up after the New Year, determined to get in shape, are slowly but predictably taking their shoes home and never coming back.
Craig Saikaly with Goodlife Fitness says some people just can’t adjust to an athletic lifestyle – and sometimes it’s just a case of biting off more than they can chew.
Saikaly says one thing that puts some people off the road to fitness is their own overenthusiasm.
“Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone just starting you can’t keep up six, seven days a week all month,” he said. “One thing you need to do is you need to make sure the fitness plan you’ve got is scheduled into your day or scheduled into your week and you want to make sure it’s consistent.
Saikaly says the key to staying on the treadmill – or elliptical, or weight bench – is to focus on something other than how much flab you’ve burned.
“Start thinking about the long-term health benefits of fitness,” he said.. “Rather than ‘I’m not losing the weight that I was losing four weeks ago, so it must be time to stop.'”
Saikaly also recommends being realistic, pointing out that no one can go from spud to stud in just a few weeks.
