Sharon Oliver remembered as ‘remarkable’ community leader

The woman who was Nova Scotia’s first black nurse and health executive has passed away.

Sharon Oliver died of cancer on Wednesday in the Valley Regional Hospital at the age of 70.

Tributes are pouring in for the community leader, who served on the advisory council of the Order of Nova Scotia and the province’s immigration advisory council.

Premier Darrell Dexter says Oliver was a “remarkable” woman who will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Oliver was also the driving force behind the creation of the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs and an executive member of the Black Loyalist Society.

PC Party leader Jamie Baillie says she will be forever remembered as a tireless voice for equality, diversity and African Nova Scotians.
