Winter weather could put the brakes on weekend plans

The Maritimes are in for another dose of winter weather this weekend.

A significant storm system is headed up the US coast and will batter parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with high winds, snow, sleet and rain.

The worst part of this system for HRM residents will be the fluctuating temperatures and changing conditions. Flurries are due to start this morning followed by heavy snowfall this afternoon.

Environment Canada is forecasting anywhere from five to 10 centimeters of snow followed by about 10 to 15 millimeters of rain in metro.

“The temperatures will rise in the evening and then fall overnight so it will cool down to below zero overnight. The timing is not great for traffic,” says meteorologist Carmen Hartt.

Drivers can first expect blowing and drifting snow causing decreased visibility on the roads during the early part of the drive home Friday, with roads getting slushy into the evening. With the cooling overnight, surfaces are likely to get slippery making stopping distances longer.

Cape Breton is expected to bear the brunt of the system. Wind warnings are in effect for Inverness County, Mabou, Sydney Metro, Cape Breton County and Victoria County because of 90 kilometer per hour winds expected for Friday evening.

New Brunswick is under a winter storm warning and snowfall warning.
