BC polygamy debate continues

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some women from a secretive polygamous sect in Bountiful will emerge from the shadows tomorrow to lend support for their lifestyle.

They will testify in a courtroom in Vancouver, insisting polygamy has been a positive force in their lives. The court case is trying to decide if Canada’s anti-polygamy law will stand a challenge.

Several women and men who left polygamous communities have already recounted what they describe as physical and emotional abuse.

Bountiful has about 1,000 residents who are members of the FLDS, a fundamentalist Mormon sect that practises polygamy, which was renounced by the mainstream church more than a century ago.
