Cost to cross harbour bridges going up this spring

Starting April 1st, it’s going to cost you more to cross the harbour bridges. The Bridge Commission has been granted an increase of $0.25 for cash tolls bringing it up to $1.00 a crossing.

Macpass users will see a $0.20 increase phased in over two years. The cost will rise to $0.70 a crossing this April, then $0.80 cents in April 2012.

“This is driven by our need to look at re-decking the MacDonald Bridge on the suspended span,” says Halifax Harbour Bridges General Manager and CEO, Steven Snider. “That engineering is underway now and we expect that we will have some on-site work occurring around 2014.”

That project is supposed to be complete by 2017. Snider says it’s not likely that fares will go back down after that.

This is the first toll hike on the harbour bridges since 1992.
