Pretrial conference set for Gallant murder case

Jason Wayne MacRae did not appear before a judge this morning, opting to let lawyers handling his murder case set dates for a pretrial conference in his absence.
The 37-year-old is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Timberlea schoolteacher Paula Gallant, whose body was found in the trunk of her car just after Christmas 2005. The car was parked at the Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea Elementary School where she taught Grade 3 students.
February 4 at 2:30 p.m. was set aside for the pretrial conference with the crown side coming back on February 17.
“The council will meet with the judge and discuss the next steps in the case and the scheduling of dates,” explained crown attorney Denise Smith.
MacRae has waved his right to a preliminary inquiry and has elected to be tried by judge and jury, but the crown says it’s still too early to think about trial dates.
“That depends upon time. It depends upon judges. There are so many factors,” said Smith.
