All the chaos surrounding education cuts in the province could soon be over. Or maybe it’s just getting started. Within the next ten days, school boards will know exactly how much money they’ll be working with for this coming year.
Education Minister, Ramona Jennex, tells News 95.7 the Finance Minister has agreed to give school boards their budgets early this year.
“So, in about ten days, I will be able to, the department will be able to provide the school boards their budgeted allocation for next year,” Jennex says. “Because they need to look at their planning and they need that information.”
Jennex won’t reveal how deep the cuts are going to be but says they won’t be as drastic as the 22 per cent over three years boards were asked to consider in a government planning document issued last fall.
Jennex is meeting with all the board chairs on February 3rd, though she says the numbers probably won’t be released on that date.
“I want to meet with the chairs to make sure that all of the information that I have been working with and all of the scenarios, I want to have a conversation with them before we put that final number forward.”
