Council this week: Parking ban, transit terminal, trash

The winter parking ban, Dartmouth transit terminal and a proposed bylaw to reduce your trash will all be up for discussion at tonight’s city council meeting.
Downtown Halifax councillor Dawn Sloane will be looking for support of her proposed amendments to the winter parking ban.
She’s making three recommendations: no ticketing when there’s no snow fall or snow removal in the process, alternative street parking in older areas of the municipality and different regulations for the urban, rural and suburban areas of HRM.
Sloane says it’s important to maintain momentum if the ban is to be changed.
“I realize it probably won’t come into effect until next year,” she said. “But if we don’t work on it now, we all forget about what the winter is like around here when it’s summertime or spring.”
If approved by council, Sloane’s letter will be sent off to the man who has the authority to alter the ban – Transportation and Infrastructure Minister, Bill Estabrooks.
Plans for the new Dartmouth transit terminal will also be discussed. Dartmouth center councillor Gloria McCluskey says council must make a decision tonight on whether to go ahead with the pricier design option, or a second streamlined and less expensive terminal.
“Definitely, by the end of the meeting, it’ll be option one or option two,” she said.
Also tonight – first reading of a proposed bylaw to reduce your allowed trash to four bags every second week, three of which must be clear.
Sloane predicts it will be a divisive topic.
