Hospitals asked to consider budget cuts

First it was school boards – now hospitals are being asked to consider funding cuts.

The Dexter government has asked administrators to work through planning exercises like the ones handed to school boards last fall.

CBC reports the hospitals have two scenarios to consider: one that cuts the budget by three per cent and the other by five.

Premier Darrell Dexter says the goal is to offer better, cheaper health care while minimizing the impact on patients.

Several health authorities are already running deficits, including Capital Health.

Officials say they will only talk about the potential impact of cuts when they have real numbers – not just scenarios.
