Day one of 2011 Canada Games sees Quebec on top

After one day of competition in the 2011 Canada Games, Quebec finds itself on top of the medal standings.

All of the medals awarded Saturday were for Long Track Speed Skating, and Quebec glided off with five, including two gold.

The team finished first and second in the Men’s 500 meter and swept the podium in the Men’s 3000 meter.

Laurent Dubreuil won a gold in the Men’s 500 meter while Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu took the silver. Alberta’s Benjamin Tam won the bronze.

Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu took top prize in the Men’s 3000 meter, with François Déry winning silver and Laurent Dubreuil taking bonze.

Alberta’s women finished one-two in the Women’s 1000 meter with Kate Hanly winning first prize, followed by Jennessa Kemp. British Columbia’s Tori Spence came in third.

Sunday’s events include Artistic Gymnastic, Biathlon, Curling, Freestyle Skiing, Hockey, Ringette, Speed Skating, Squash and Wheelchair Basketball.
