Learning about Canadians at Canada Games

Curling, hockey and ringette are all sports we’re pretty familiar with in Canada – but how would they look to someone who’s never seen a game?
The Canada Games aren’t just providing entertainment over the next two weeks – they’re providing one English as a Second Language class a chance to get a close look at some favorite Canadian pastimes.
The students will see as many events as they can while the Games are underway and most recently took in women’s curling on Tuesday.
Chekba Harjavajil, from Nepal, says he’s never seen anything like it.
“I like the game, in my country we never play that game,” he said, marveling at teams of players sliding around hollering at rocks. “I like, I’m enjoying that game.”
Achan, from Ethiopia, says she knows who to cheer for.
“The best is Nova Scotia!”
ISIS instructor Carol McAskill says the games have provided a great opportunity for her students to learn about Canadian culture and says many students want to share the sports with some other very important people.
“A number of them have asked if they can come back later and see with their children,” she said. “They would like to introduce their children to it so I think that’s a very big part as well.”
