Stowaways detained until Monday

Two stowaways found aboard a container ship in Halifax, and considered illegal migrants by the federal government, will remain detained until at least Monday.

The Halifax Refugee Clinic says that’s when a detention review hearing is expected to take place to determine whether the men can be released on conditions.

They’re being detained at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth on immigration grounds because there is no immigration holding centre in Halifax.

The men, believed to be in their 20’s, were found Wednesday aboard the A-C-L vessel, Atlantic Concert – a Swedish vessel that left Halifax Saturday morning.

The refugee clinic’s executive director Julie Chamagne says the men speak Arabic and it’s possible they’re from North Africa.
