A young Beaverbank boxer got his Canada Games quest for glory off to a great start.
Taylor Gordon, 17, won his opening bout in the 64 kilogram weight class Monday night with a 5-3 defeat of Alberta’s Devin Reti.
Gordon says it’s sweet revenge following a 2009 loss to the Albertan.
“I took a lot of pride in that win,” he said. “I feel he stole a victory from me a few years ago. Not that he didn’t deserve the decision, he did. He outboxed me, he brought his “A” game and today I brought mine.”
He says the win has set the tone for the rest of the games.
“In my wildest dreams it didn’t feel this good,” he said. “This is only the preliminary rounds and that felt like a gold medal right there. I’ve got to approach all my fights like that. Every fight’s a gold medal fight for me.”
Taylor’s father – former Olympian and current Team Nova Scotia boxing coach – Wayne Gordon says his son will be ready for the next opponent.
“By no means is the competition over for us,” he said. “We have a very difficult bout tomorrow [Tuesday] night against Newfoundland’s Jeff Cuff. Not going to think about no more what happened today, we’re looking at dropping a couple of pounds and preparing for the next match.”
Wayne and Taylor weren’t the only boxing Gordons at the Halifax Forum Monday night. Taylor’s grandfather – a former boxing coach for Team Canada – was also in attendance.
