The Dexter government is freezing health care budgets for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The nine provincial health districts and IWK Health Centre have been told they will have to work with the same amount of funding they received for 2010-2011.
Health Minister Maureen MacDonald admits this will be a challenge but thinks the province’s DHA’s are fully capable of meeting this challenge.
“Managing with the same amount of funding, after years of funding growth, is challenging,” said Ms. MacDonald. “But given that health care costs have almost doubled in 10 years, and that health accounts for 42 per cent of the provincial budget, it is a challenge we must meet to protect patient care now and into the future.”
The budget will be tabled in the house this spring.
