Parking ban ends tonight, earlier than expected

The much-hated overnight winter parking ban in Halifax’s urban core will end earlier than expected tonight, at one minute to midnight.
It’s the third year in a row the ban has been lifted earlier than expected.
HRM Traffic Authority Ken Reashor tells News95.7 the early cancellation is in recognition of the mild weather forecast for this weekend and next week.
“We appreciate the public’s attention to the ban which has been reflected in the number of tickets that were issued this year versus 2009-10,” says Reashor. “We understand that there are frustrations with the ban, but the rules always come down to ensuring our streets are well-cleared and safe for our citizens.”
HRM says this year saw a continued decline in number of tickets issued for violation of the ban. To date there have been 7,637 tickets issued compared with 10,753 issued over the same period last year. The same period in 2008-09 showed 18,038 tickets issued.
The city reminds drivers that that Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act says parked vehicles obstructing snow removal operations at any time throughout the year may be towed.
