Mayor wants municipal courts

Mayor Peter Kelly wants to resurrect an institution from the past, but he’ll need the province’s help to make it happen.
The Police Commission will strike a committee to look into the establishment of HRM’s own municipal court.
The mayor tells News95.7 he knows the provincial courts are under pressure.
“Sometimes there’s a feeling that the provincial court system doesn’t take our issues as seriously as we would like them to,” says Kelly. “And it makes that much more challenging for us.”
The mayor says HRM courts could adjudicate bylaw enforcement and traffic matters, and the revenue would go to the city, not the province.
We haven’t had city courts since amalgamation back in 1996. The Municipal Government Act doesn’t give us jursdiction, so it would be up to the province to change it, and that will take some convincing.
