Council this week: supplementary education funding

Regional councillors must make a decision this week on how much extra funding the municipality will send to the local school board.

The city collects a mandatory education tax that funds the boards – but also kicks in millions of dollars more called supplementary funding, which totals nearly $19 million dollars.

However, the annual funding amount has been falling by $450,000 a year as part of a four-year deal which is coming to an end.

A report from city staff recommends renewing the deal and keeping the current funding model for another four years, complete with the $450,000 cut each year.

Also on today’s council agenda are reports from the environment and sustainability committee and the transportation committee, as well as a few public hearings set for 6 p.m.

One will examine community matters from Chebucto and the Northwest community councils; another focuses on a land-use issue on Kearney Lake Road  and the last deals with changes to right of way allowances on part of Portland Street.
