HRM debating new anti-idling bylaw

The city is considering a new bylaw that will crack down on idling vehicles.

The new rules would build on an anti-idling policy that bans employees from taking municipal government vehicles to a drive-thru window.

The bylaw would make it illegal to run the engine in a vehicle that’s motionless for more than three minutes.

HRM’s manager of sustainble environment tells the Herald a draft should be ready for a public hearing this fall.

Richard MacLellan says enforcement won’t be  heavy-handed. A staff report recommends paying for a public education campaign to help promote the new law.
