Council this week: downtown development

Downtown development is back on the agenda at HRM council today.

Reports are in from the chief administrative officer on a couple of proposals for the Barrington Street area.

One is a development agreement for the Roy building and adjoining properties around Barrington, Sackville and Granville Streets.

The report recommends approving a development agreement for the property that will use the Barrington Street facade to replicate the features and materials of the existing Roy and Johnston buildings using stone from the existing structure.

The plan from Starfish Properties is to develop a 15-storey mixed-use building with a penthouse.

The other project is for the building that currrently houses the Discovery Centre at Barrington and Sackville. The report recommends keeping the facade mostly as it is but otherwise approving the development agreement for a retail and residential space that will be 241 feet tall at its highest point.

Also on the agenda is a public hearing on the Armco lands at Hines Road in Eastern Passage.

The regular council meeting starts at 2:30 p.m.
