Transportation Committee moves Nantucket Transit Terminal forward

The Nantucket Transit Terminal project took a major step forward Wednesday.

The city’s Transportation Committee voted in favour of having the funding of the terminal be referred to the budget process which begins in the next two weeks.

There was no formal report presented but the committee didn’t need one.

Manager of Transportation Ken Reashor explained money for the terminal could be found in other long term projects.

“What we’re going to be proposing through the budget process is that we would shift money that isn’t going to be spent in a specific year, because of timing of construction, and shifting that to the Nantucket Terminal,” said Reashor.

He said a large portion of that would come from Lacewood Terminal project.

“It’s similar to what we’ve done with the ferry in the past,” said Reashor. “We’ve borrowed from the ferry project to purchase buses prior to the Canada Games.”

There were some concerns the move could delay that and other projects but Reashor assured the Committee any delays that did arise wouldn’t be as a result of this decision.
