Missed deadlines could hike convention centre costs

The cost of a new convention centre in Halifax may climb if a cost-sharing deal isn’t reached with Ottawa soon.

Developer Joe Ramia says he’s sent all his original cost estimates for re-evaluation in light of a second missed deadline.

Ramia had set the price of the new facility at $159 million, but two signing deadlines have now come and gone without any commitment from the federal government.

No funding commitments will be made during the federal election.

Ramia tells Metro Halifax he’s now considering a “cut-off date,” when he’ll proceed with alternative plans for the downtown site.

Bill Estabrooks, Nova Scotia’s minister for infrastructure renewal, says the province will have to look at any new price “very thoroughly.”
