Highly anticipated “Levin’s Report” calls for NS school closures

A review into Nova Scotia’s public education system is calling for school closures as the province grapples with budgetary restraints and declining student enrollment.
In December, the provincial government appointed education expert Ben Levin to examine the school system and report on how it can be improved.
In a report released Thursday, Levin says the Department of Education can make better use of facilities and resources by closing some schools.
Levin says a rapid decline in enrollment means there is excess space in some schools, and that the government could save money by closing a few.
Other recommendation include reducing the failure rate in schools, improving daily teaching practices and allowing more things to “count” for earning school credentials.
Education Minister Ramona Jennex says the report is open for feedback and the government will respond to the recommendations in the fall.
