Province to appoint governing panel for Bridgetown

The province will appoint a panel of caretakers to run Bridgetown’s day-to-day operations, possibly until municipal elections are held in October of next year.

The mayor and entire town council of Bridgetown resigned on Tuesday, saying they weren’t equipped to handle the town’s complex financial problems.

Municipal Relations Minister John MacDonell tells the Chronicle Herald this is “unchartered territory,” but says cabinet does have a responsibilty to appoint a mini-government to handle the town’s day-to-day operations.

He says three people have already been sent to Bridgetown to help with daily business, and he’s hoping to have the complete caretaker panel in place within the month.

RCMP are currently investigating a theft complaint filed by the town but won’t reveal any details.
