Insurance review recommends no-cap option

A review of Nova Scotia’s auto insurance system suggests drivers should be allowed to sue if they’re hurt in an accident.
The review also recommends giving drivers the option of buying insurance that doesn’t limit the maximum award for soft tissue injuries.
The Tory government capped those awards at $2500 in 2003 in hopes of curbing rising insurance rates.
Last year, the NDP raised the cap to $7500.
The review says introducing the “full-tort” option would restore choice to consumers, though it would have to come at a higher premium.
Finance Minister Graham Steele says he’ll take some time to analyze the costs of the report’s recommendations before deciding which ones to implement.
