School board votes to save 40 teachers from layoffs

Forty probationary teachers who would have been laid off next fall will keep their jobs.

The Halifax Regional School Board met this week and decided to reverse last month’s decision after hearing from parents and students who wanted the jobs saved.

Acting board chairman Gin Yee says the cuts would have saved nearly half a million dollars, but staff has been told to find the money by reducing the amounts budgeted for items like professional development, substitute teachers, and oil consumption.

Yee says the board usually over-budgets for those items but “tightening the assumptions” does run the risk of getting into a deficit.

He says the board decided the risk was worth saving 40 jobs.
