The Vancouver Canucks are one win away from bringing the Stanley Cup back to Canada for the first time since 1993 and fans don’t want to miss what could be a historic night in Boston.
Whether wearing Canuck jerseys or dressed as the recognizable Green Men, fans of the Canadian team are traveling stateside for Game 6 of the National Hockey League playoffs.
Many Beantown bar owners are welcoming Canucks fans to their establishments to watch the match, shoulder-to-shoulder with Bruins’ fans.
“I think Vancouver fans are a little more laid back, a little more easy going,” said bar owner Peter Colter. “They seem to get along okay.”
There have been a lot of reports of bad treatment of Canuck fans during the previous away games in Boston.
“A lot of people did know of us and had seen us on YouTube or whatever,” Green Man Sully told News 95.7’s sister station in Vancouver, News 1130. “When we got into the game all of that was swept under the rug and we instantly became enemies of a lot of people down there. It was a mixed reaction. Probably 90 per cent of people were great with us and another 10 per cent at the game were a little rough.”
Vancouver leads the series 3-2, but were humbled 8-1 and 4-0 in their first two attempts at TD Gardens.
News1130’s sports director said, looking at the two previous scores, there’s speculation Boston will win Monday and force a Game 7 in Vancouver on Wednesday.
“Most Bruins fans that I spoke to this afternoon are confident that Boston will win and force a Game 7,” said Ann Schmaltz, who is in Boston. “But then they’ve all suggested that their team struggles in Vancouver. So, they’re doubtful that their team will be bringing home the cup.”
If Vancouver wins tonight, it will be the team’s first Stanley Cup.
