Council approves parking ban changes, increased towing budget

Halifax Regional Councillors have approved changes to the overnight winter parking ban that could allow street parking under certain circumstances – but there’s also the potential for more vigorous enforcement of the rules.
Council approved a trial run of implementing the ban only when there’s snow on the ground.
That means that as of Dec. 15, residents can park on the street overnight if there’s no snow in the forecast.
The head of HRM’s traffic authority told councillors Tuesday he will monitor the weather and try to give a day or two notice that the ban will be implemented if snow is on the way.
Those in violation of the ban will face $50 tickets or $300 towing fees.
The changes are being made on a trial basis and councillors were warned they’d have to accept the possibility that snow removal would not meet existing service standards.
Transportation and public works director Ken Reashor also said that if there’s any indication the relaxed rules lead to safety problems, the pilot project will come to an end – immediately.
Council also voted to shorten the parking ban hours to 1 to 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m.
