We can finally say goodbye – or maybe good riddance – to a dreary, wet spring.
Summer officially arrives at 2:16 p.m. today, and for many Halifax residents it seems it can’t come soon enough.
Emily says she’s looking forward to a sunny summer after the soggy spring.
“It was pretty rainy,” she said. “But maybe it was worth it now, if we’re going to get sun for the rest of the summer.”
Peter also says he’s fed up with rain and is hoping to make up for some lost time.
“I’m hoping to get outdoors more, just play some more soccer and get outside and really enjoy it before it’s too late,” he said.
Jessica, visiting from Toronto, says a lot of rain is hard to take – but suggests it’s better than stifling heat and humidity.
“In Toronto, it’s actually been quite warm, we’ve had over 40 degrees with the humidity,” she said.
News 95-7 meterologist Richard Zurawski says it may have felt like the rain never stopped, but it was actually a pretty average Maritime spring.
“We usually, normally, in the month of May, get slightly over 100 mm of rain,” he said. “We recorded 120 to 130, so we’re up on that, but we’re not into record territory.”
Zurawski says precipitation in June has also slightly above normal, but daytime temperatures were around average.
He says the forecast shows that summer is off to a great start.
“For the first few days of summer, it looks great,” he said. “Temperatures are at normal or above normal levels, and we’re looking at a fair amount of sunshine.”
Zurawski says in the short-term, temperatures look like they’ll hover around seasonal norms.
