Springhill Institution sees second inmate death in a month

By The Canadian Press

An inmate has died while in custody in Nova Scotia.

The Correctional Service of Canada says the inmate died at the Springhill Institution on Tuesday. The inmate was 78 and began serving a life sentence in 2003.

His next of kin has been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the CSC will review the circumstances of the death.

Few other details were released; however, the most recent incident marks the second death in the facility this month.

On May 5, 2026, a 43-year-old inmate died while in custody.

At the time of death, Darren Bonenfant had been serving a sentence of two years, which began on January 29, 2026.
