Rally being held for blinded UBC student

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A vicious attack by her husband in Bangladesh left her blind and disfigured. This afternoon, Rumana Manzur’s friends will be rallying in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery to raise awareness about domestic violence. The event begins at 3 p.m.
Manzur’s friend Marlene deRuiter says there are two reasons for today’s rally: to show support for Manzur and to bring an awareness of domestic violence around the world.
She says her friend didn’t talk much about her relationship with her husband for the sake of Manzur’s five-year-old daughter. She only hinted there were problems.
deRuiter adds they used to make dinners together with a group of friends on campus and were close.
Manzur is an international graduate student at UBC. She returned to Bangladesh in May to visit her family and that’s when her husband reportedly attacked her. Her husband, Hasan Sayeed apparently confessed to attacking Manzur after police arrested him.
A website has been set-up to collect donations for Manzur.
