Police warn drivers to slow down for summer

As adults head back to work after the Canada Day long weekend, grade-school children are enjoying the freedom of their summer holidays and police are urging motorists to be on the alert.
RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae notes that children may be playing in the street and riding bikes and skateboards on the road and sidewalks and with the excitment of the summer holidays, they may forget the rules of the road.
“We go around with basically that ‘nothing’s going to happen to me’ (notion),” MacRae said. “Of course, that’s an innate human instinct because we don’t want to be a whole bunch of Chicken Littles thinking the world’s going to fall apart. But at the same token, things can happen to people.”
Parents are also being asked to speak to their children about playing safely outside.
One more reminder, helmets are mandatory for children and adults on bikes, skateboards and rollerblades.
