Gas exploration permit extended

Nova Scotia’s Energy Department has granted a Toronto-based company a one-year extension for a land lease agreement at the centre of a public protest over a controversial method of extracting natural gas.
The extension means that PetroWorth Resources Inc. retains the sole right to apply for an exploration permit in the Lake Ainslie area of Cape Breton.
The company has yet to apply for such a permit.
Earlier this year, about 60 people gathered outside Energy Minister Charlie Parker’s constituency office to make it clear they are opposed to hydraulic fracturing in the area.
They say the process, if approved, could damage the environment.
However, Parker issued a statement saying the extension has nothing to do with hydraulic fracturing and it does not give the company permission to proceed with any exploration activity.
