He said, she said: councillors square off

A regional councillor accused of disrespecting women says it’s a claim he will not tolerate.

Coun. Dawn Sloane (Halifax Downtown) got into an angry exchange with Coun. Bill Karsten (Portland – East Woodlawn) Tuesday evening when she accused him of disrespecting women.

Sloane was addressing council on the issue of street sweepers when she heard Karsten whispering into his microphone, and demanded he stop.

Sloane then claimed Karsten has a history of interrupting female councillors, which prompted Karsten to demand an apology.

Karsten says he’s never in his life had a disrespect for women, but Sloane refused to give an immediate apology.

Coun. Sue Uteck (Northwest Arm – South End) got into a similar exchange with Karsten in late April.

It was agreed Karsten and Sloane would address the matter later in the Mayor’s chambers.
