Accused MLA gets new lawyer

A defense attorney handling one of the four cases in the MLA expense scandal is crossing the floor.
Former MLA Dave Wilson’s attorney Mark Guthro is taking a job with the provincial Crown attorney’s office in Sydney.
Neither the accused, his former lawyer nor his new lawyer were before a judge at the Spring Garden courthouse today for what was scheduled to be an election hearing.
Representative Alfred Seaman told the judge Stephen O’Leary will be taking over the case and the matter was pushed back to September 2, at 9:30 a.m.
“I received word from Mr. O’Leary that he will be acting for Mr. Wilson in Glace Bay,” Chief Crown Attorney Andrew MacDonald told reporters outside the courtroom Thursday.
“We put the matter over to give Mr. O’Leary an opportunity to familiarize himself with the file,” said MacDonald.
Wilson is charged with one count of fraud, one count of breach of trust by a public officer and 31 counts of uttering forged documents.
