Crown to oppose bail for suspects in hatchet attack

The Crown says it will oppose bail for two men charged after a hatchet attack in downtown Halifax.

Shane Lee Croke and Benjamin Joshua Gillis appeared in court for arraignment Wednesday.

The pair was arrested after a man was hit in the head with a hatchet at Duke and Barrington on Tuesday afternoon.

He was hospitalized with a non-life threatening injury.

Gillis, 20, returns to court for a bail hearing today. Croke, 22, will be back on July 20.

He’ll remain in jail until then.

Police say the attack was likely drug-related.
