Four sailors unharmed after escaping burning ship

Rescue officials say four people are safe and sound after escaping from a burning fishing vessel off the coast of Nova Scotia.

The crew of the Emily Lisa reported in a distress call they were getting into life-rafts around 8:30 Sunday evening about 100 kilometres southeast of Halifax.

Coast Guard ships, a cormorant helicopter and a hercules aircraft were all dispatched, but the sailors were picked up by a nearby commercial vessel, the Chemtrans Sea.

The Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre in Halifax says they’re heading for Sydney.
