Transit service available to and from Prospect

A group of volunteers from Prospect were able to see their hard work pay off Tuesday morning. It was the launch of a six month pilot project for transit service to and from Prospect.
“There is no public transit (in Prospect). There are no sidewalks,” says Barb Allen, Chair of the community group that organized the initiative. “It’s difficult. Especially for older people you know. If one partner dies they can’t get in to the city for medical appointments. That kind of thing.”
The initiative was given $50,000 from the province but nothing from the city. Mayor Peter Kelly says the city may consider expanding Metro Transit service to Prospect eventually, but the community needs to prove there’s a real demand for it.
“You have to use it,” he says. “And so if there is a desire of the community to sustain it, then they’re going to have to step forward and use the service to prove that the community is behind this type of operation.”
The private bus service is expected to cost $2,000 a week to operate.
