Gruesome catch at Bedford docks “not human”

A gruesome sight on the end of a fishing line prompted a woman in Bedford to summon Halifax Regional Police to the docks, Thursday morning.

Mary Ann says she was fishing for mackerel off the pier at the end of Waterfront Drive around 7:30 a.m. when she pulled something from the water she thought police should see.

“I thought I had a fish at first and I thought, it’s just coming up to the top. It’s not going to fight me until it hits the top,” she told reporters while driving from the police scene.

“It was gruesome. Something out of a horror movie,” she continued.

Police are referring to the catch as a biological mass, but Mary Ann described it as stringy, coagulated, fresh and more than just fish guts; a sight, which she said, made here think she was going to lose her breakfast.

“When it got to the top something fell off the end of it as it came out of the water and the rest of it was stuck to my line,” she said. “I thought it was just grass or something and it would hit the bottom, but then it stuck to the wall.”

Police said the medical examiner’s initial indications are that the matter is not human remains, but additional tests were being run to determine what it is.

By early afternoon, police were confident in saying the discovery was “not human” and appeared to be some kind of “sea life”.

Police are holding the scene.
