Hundreds of thousands expected for this year’s Pride parade

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Organizers are expecting an even bigger turnout for this summer’s Pride parade. Last year, 600,000 came to Vancouver’s downtown to enjoy the spectacle.

But with Vancouver hosting the ‘Outgames,’ Ken Coolen with the Vancouver Pride Society says well over a thousand athletes will be here to compete and join the celebration.

“It’s a gay sporting competition sort of like a ‘gay Olympics.’  There will be athletes of all sorts from all around North America and even the world, coming to Vancouver to Pride week to compete in different events,” he explains.

Last year’s Pride was the biggest ever. “It keeps growing and we’re just over the 600,000 is what we’ve been told.  What we’ve been finding is that there’s not a lot of room to fit in more people.”

The July 31 parade winds down Robson, Denman and Davie. Davie St. closes Friday night for a big dance party.
