Five-car accident closes Highway 101

One man is in hospital with serious injuries after a multi-vehicle pileup which has closed a section of Highway 101 into Bedford, this morning.
Police say a vehicle was stopped, possibly at the side of the road or stalled, when it was struck by another vehicle and sent spinning into the concrete centre medium where it was hit my another vehicle, around 5:15 a.m.
“We have one male in the hospital. He was struck and he was found outside of his vehicle. We don’t know the extent of his injuries at this time,” said Staff Sgt. Gerald Grobmeier told News 95.7.
Grobmeier said it appears the victim was thrown from the initial vehicle.
The crashes damaged the centre medium causing concrete to fall into a lane of outbound traffic, which two other vehicles then crash into.
Police say a flatbed truck was involved in the crashes in the inbound lane and that one of the vehicles is leaking fluids onto the road.
“We have our crash investigation team there, an analyst,” said Grobmeier. “They’re currently going through the scene, taking measurements and trying to determine the events that unfolded. We’ll be taking statements from anybody and everybody involved.”
It’s expected the inbound highway will be closed for an extended period of time. Traffic is being rerouted onto the Magazine Hill.
Police said charges could be laid.
