Bedford Bypass re-opened after hours-long closure

The Bedford Bypass to Dartmouth is open again after an accident closed it for several hours – for the second time this week.

An 18-wheel tractor-trailer carrying a load of tires trying to make the exit from the 101 to Magazine Hill flipped onto its side around 1:15 this morning.

“It’s a sharp corner and it comes up quickly on you if you’re not paying attention,” Staff Sgt. Gerald Grobmeier told News 95.7 Friday morning. “If you’ve got a big, heavy load it can certainly come up quicker on you than for those of us in a normal car.”

The driver was not injured and was able to exit the cab safely.

Fire officials closed the inbound lanes of the Bedford Bypass at Sackville Drive and the 101 while the tractor-trailer and its load were cleared away.

The exit from Highway 102 to Highway 101 outbound was also closed for a short time.

This is the second time this week major crashes have disrupted morning traffic on the 101 in Sackville.

On Wednesday morning, five vehicles, including a flatbed truck, were involved in a crash on the exit to the 102 which sent on man to hospital with serious injuries.

That accident also closed the 101 inbound for several hours, causing long delays for commuters.
