An atypical thunder and lightning storm continues to threaten Halifax and other parts of Nova Scotia today, some 12 hours after it settled over the area.
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Halifax Metro, Halifax County West and Halifax County east of Porters Lake. A rainfall warning is also in effect for Halifax, Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough counties, with up to 50mm expected over the next 24 hours.
The province was battered by torrential rain and rolling thunder Tuesday afternoon and throughout the night.
News 95.7 meterologist Richard Zurawski says such sustained storm activity is unusual for the Maritimes.
“The thundershowers just kept on coming and coming,” said News 95.7 meteorologist Richard Zurawski. “Normally, we get some thundershowers that might last an hour or two, but these have lasted quite a while and will continue to last as long as we’re in this air mass.”
Zurawski added this is the type of weather usually seen in southern Ontario.
The storm knocked out power to thousands of residents across metro overnight with outages lasting between eight and 10 hours in some areas.
Nova Scotia Power was still restoring power in Bridgewater, Goshen and Liverpool Wednesday morning.
