Stadium fervour cools after premier’s comments

Several regional councillors are backing away from a stadium proposal after the premier said the province can’t contribute any funding right now.

Premier Darrell Dexter said Wednesday his government has no money to put up for the proposed multi-use facility in HRM.

Coun. Steve Streatch (Eastern Shore – Musquodoboit Valley) tells the Herald that’s a strike against moving forward with the project.

Coun. Tim Outhit (Bedford) says if there are no firm funding partners coming on board, he’ll vote against the project.

Coun. Brad Johns (Middle-Upper Sackville-Lucasville) adds the stadium ranks low on the priority list compared to the current push for a convention centre, which he supports.

Council voted this week to go ahead with phase two of a stadium feasibility study at a cost of $275,000.
