News that NDP leader Jack Layton had passed away created a shockwave across the nation this morning. The 61-year-old passed away just after 4a.m. surrounded by family. Regardless of politics stripes, people across the country mourned, remembering the down-to-earth, charismatic, passionate man who fought for social justice and just recently swept the NDP into Official Opposition in Parliament for the first time in the party’s 50-year existence. Today we remember Jack. We will talk with political scientists Tom Urbaniak and Peter McKenna who’ve followed Layton since the beginning. Former NDP leader Alexa McDonough, current Nova Scotia MPs Megan Leslie, Peter Stoffer and Robert Chisholm. We’ll also get reaction from Halifax’s mayor, local councillors and the Labour federation president Rick Clarke. Meanwhile, rebels in Libya have swept into capital city Tripoli, capturing three of Momar Ghadafi’s sons and claiming the city’s major military base. We speak with SMU Middle East political scientist John Measor and the headmaster at Halifax’s Muslim Academy, Hadi Salah on the latest stunning developments in the six-month-old war. Also in our 3pm hour, Halifax city council is facing a boundary review – what does downtown councillor Dawn Sloane (who’s district will be split in two) and Bedford councillor Tim Outhit think about the changes. Rounding things out, we’re closing in on the busy hurricane season for the Maritimes, we chat with the Hurricane Centre’s Chris Fogarty. NSTU president Alexis Allen chats back to school with us.
