“Greater Halifax” an alternative name for HRM

Halifax Regional Council will be discussing changing the city’s name, and possible alternatives, during its regular weekly meeting Tuesday.

Councillor Gloria McCluskey (Dartmouth Centre) is expected to make a motion to direct staff to explore alternatives to the cumbersome “Halifax Regional Municipality” and its non-descript acronym “HRM.”

The former Dartmouth Mayor knows that just “Halifax” would not be be accepted by the many communities which were amalgamated in 1996.

McCluskey told Metro News she thinks people could support the name “Greater Halifax.”

The debate has been on hold since February 9, 2010 when council decided to shelve the issue until the culmination of the boundary review.

The Utility and Review Board made a ruling on the size of council in July, deciding the 23-member council should be reduced to 16 members plus the mayor.

The District Boundary Review is due to be completed by October 21.
