Council considers ban on downtown drive-thrus

Regional council is considering banning drive-thrus in downtown Halifax.

A motion presented to council for first reading Tuesday night states drive-thrus are convenient for service delivery, but not appropriate in a “denser, more compact urban context.”

Coun. Dawn Sloane (Halifax-Downtown) tells News 95.7 she supports the idea.

“We don’t need them,” she said. “We’re trying to make a walkable community, and drive-thrus are really not part of that situation.”

Sloane says any existing drive-thrus would be grandfathered in under the amendment to the Municipal Land Use bylaw.

The motion would likely have to go to a public hearing before being passed.
