Everyone should buckle-up: Transportation Minister

The Minister of Transportation says everyone should have to wear a seatbelt.

The current law provides exemptions for couriers, taxi drivers, emergency health-care workers and people with certain medical conditions. But those exemptions could soon be abolished.

Halifax Fire Services is asking the province to end the seatbelt exemption for its firefighters. The issue is now under review by the province’s Road Action Committee.

Transportation Minister Bill Estabrooks would like to see it taken one step further. He thinks all seatbelt exemptions should be ended.

“I don’t understand how you could be safer not having your seatbelt on medically,” he says. “But, it’s under review by the Road Action Committee and we’ll see what they come up with. You’re safer with a seatbelt on. That’s my opinion as a Minister.”

No changes to the legislation would be made before next year.
