Early lead helps Mooseheads down Saint John

The Halifax Mooseheads earned their third straight win Friday night, surviving a late comeback attempt to defeat the Saint John Sea Dogs 5-4 at TD Station.

The Mooseheads opened the scoring with three straight goals. Caylen Blake netted the first for Halifax at 5:01 on the powerplay, capitalizing on a screen from Daniel Walters, to beat Saint John netminder Arseni Radkov. The powerplay continued to deliver at 7:25 as Samuel Rousseau knocked a pass from Liam Kilfoil into the Sea Dogs goal for his 11th marker of the season. Oleg Kulebiakin then fired a goal line pass from Quinn Kennedy past Radkov at 19:09. Saint John added their first of the game with nine seconds remaining in the opening frame as Dylan Rozzi stripped a Moosehead’s player of the puck before finding Everett Baldwin who beat Owen Bresson to cut the Herd’s lead to two.

Kilfoil responded at 1:38 of the second period with a Malik L’Italien in front of the Sea Dogs net. The Quispamsis native made no mistake, beating Radkov to extend the Mooseheads’ lead to three. But Angello Fullerton scored twice to bring Saint John back within one.

Then in a rare occurence a goalie fight took place at TD Station as Bresson and Radkov squared off. Goalie changes were required as both netminders were handed game misconducts for their altercation. Nick Cirka entered the game for Halifax while Rafaël Courchesne took over the net for the Sea Dogs.

The Mooseheads continued to find success on the powerplay as Owen Philips took a pass from Kulebiakin off the faceoff and blasted a shot past Courchesne for his sixth goal of the season that turned into the eventual game winner. Rozzi then fired back for the Sea Dogs, tipping a shot from Maxime Côté past Cirka late in the third. A scoreless final frame secured the win for the Herd.

With the win, Halifax improves to 28-27-3-3 on the season.

Despite the loss, Saint John swept the three stars. Fullerton earned first star with a pair of goals, second star went to Rozzi with a goal and two assists while Morin was awarded third star.

The Mooseheads are back in action Saturday for the second game of their weekend series against the Saint John Sea Dogs at TD Station.
