Talking tomatoes on Foodie Friday

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Are they fruit? Are they vegetables? Either way, they make for good eating! This week on Foodie Friday we’re talking about the tomato!

Cassandra Anderton with Good Life Vancouver is picking tomatoes from her plot at the community garden at Vancouver City Hall and checking out what’s popping up on menus around Metro Vancouver.

“The Fairmont Vancouver Airport is doing an heirloom tomato salad with bocconcini and balsamic vinegar,” Anderton says. “Out at Kits Daily Kitchen there is an heirloom tomato salad with balsamic vinegar and Saltspring goat cheese.”

Anderton also has a tip if you’re thinking about growing your own tomatoes.

“What I would suggest is getting some tomato plants from the greenhouse and making sure that they’re at a certain maturity before you try to plant them in Vancouver because we have a short season.”

As for using them in your own kitchen, Anderton says they are great for homemade relish, soups, bouillabaisse and fish dishes.
