ALC under review after under-reporting insider wins

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation is going under the microscope. The province has ordered a review of the lottery giant after learning it under-reported the number of insider wins during the 2009-10 fiscal year.

Earlier this month, statistics released by the ALC showed ‘non-arms length’ lotto wins were up nearly 8% in 2010-11 compared to the previous year. But now we know, the numbers from that previous year were wrong. The actual number was nearly double what the ALC reported.

“We’re always concerned about that,” says Dave Wilson, minister responsible for part one of the Gaming Control Act. “That’s why as soon as I heard there were any issues or concern around that reporting and the share number of the wins, I requested a review. And I’m sure that all the information in detail in that review will be provided to me and I look forward to that.”

Wilson says he’s confident this was a clerical error and not an attempt by the ALC to cover up the high number of big lotto wins by players connected to the corporation.

Wilson says this will be an external review and isn’t sure when it will be complete.
